Quantitave estimation of area precipitation by radar has not yet advanced to a state, that its products are usable in fields like hydrology and meteorological data assimilation. Currently the deficiencies of QPE by radar are circumvented by calibrating the radar products with surface rain gauges, a questionable approach due to incompatibilities of both spatial and temporal characteristics of both data sources. The projects organized within the AQUARadar project cluster will improve QPE with radar by fully exploiting the information content of radar images including spatial and temporal structures in addition to polarimetric information.
