OBJECT-BASED ANALYSIS AND SEAMLESS PREDICTION

Hans-Ertel Centre for Weather Research - Atmospheric Dynamics and Predictability Branch

Summer School on Remote Sensing of Clouds and Precipitation

July 15-19, 2013

Bonn, Germany

Aim

The summer school introduced the basics and applications of to state-of-the-art remote sensing instruments for clouds and precipitation and concentrate on cloud radars, polarimetric weather radars and satellite-based sensors, which enables us to monitor the entire cloud and precipitation generating process chain. The summer school focussed on deep convective clouds because of their potential for causing extreme weather events.

An information flyer on the summer school can be downloaded here as PDF document.

Format

Lectures were given by scientists of the OASE project as well as by internationally reknown experts. Additionally, exercises gave the participants hands-on experience with remote sensing data. A poster session provided an ideal platform for the young scientists to present and discuss their research interests. An excursion to JOYCE (Jülich ObservatorY for Cloud Evolution), which is becoming one of the leading international observation sites for cloud and precipitation, was part of the summer school. A detailed agenda of the summer school is also available as PDF document.
