The potential use of specific attenuation A for rainfall estimation has been already presented in Ryzhkov et al. (2014). In Diederich et al. (2014b) an in depth comparison of different rainfall retrievals is performed, i.e. rainfall estimates based on specific attenuation R(A) are compared to reflectivity based retrievals R(Z) and R(KDP) retrievals using specific differential phase KDP. For a period of five summer months, hourly and daily rainfall accumulations from the different rain estimators are compared to rain gauge measurements. The results demonstrate the best performance of R(A) complemented with R(Z) in segments with low differential phase shift. The second-best performance is obtained with R(KDP) combined with R(Z) at rain rates below 8 mm/h.
