Research Stay at Kochi University of Technology, Japan

Researcher: Junghwa Lee (Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS))
Place: Kochi University of Technology, Japan
Time Period: 16.06.2019 - 28.06.2019
Funded by PROM Network Funds

The idea of the two weeks research stay for Junghwa Lee, SPOCC project, was to collaborate with Prof. Dr. Hashino at the Kochi University of Technology in Japan to get advice for a different treatment of various ice particle habits. He's been developing the so-called Advanced Microphysics Prediction System (AMPS) for several years, and we've got a lot of tips and advice when Junghwa tested and further developed the code together with him. Also, Junghwa intensively tested his code from small test cases to real cases, and discussed results during the stay.

In addition, we discussed his most recent research about deposition freezing on to “shaped” parti-cles capacitance method and on Arctic mixed-phase cloud studies with 3D Large Eddy Simulation (LES) settings and trying to understand relationships between ice nucleation processes and crystal habits (Hahino et al., 2020 and Ong et al., 2021).

Finally, we collaborated on work concerning ground-based cloud radar together with a radar simulator to evaluate the simulation. With the help of these studies, we applied the radar forward opera-tor based on recent work performed at TROPOS and the CR-SIM and PAMTRA to the output from our model data.
