Radar processing

The so-called I/Q-data of the twin X-Band radars BoXPol and JuXPol are processed directly at the radar sites into so-called polarimetric moments. The moment data of volume scans, genuine range-height-indicators (RHIs), and vertical scans are permanently stored as raw data at FZJ for JuXPol and at University Bonn for BoXPol. JuXPol data are, however, continuously transferred to University Bonn, where MIUB processes both data into various - also combined - products (composites) including surface rainfall intensity and a 3D hydrometeor classification. The continuous observations are repeated every five minutes to allow future compositing also with surrounding DWD C-Band radars. All data, including additional online data from external sources (e.g. from DWD) is archived on storage servers, which are mirrored at the computing center of the university of Bonn (HRZ). The raw moment data is transferred in near-real-time to dedicated processing machines, which perform e.g. preprocessing, filtering, compositing, quantitative precipitation estimation QPE (also provided to the local water authority of the river Erft,, and visualization on the institute's web-page. Separate program packages cover aspects of rain accumulation ( and first attempts of forecasting and flash flood warning ( and All visualization and processing is done via database queries. Processed data is provided to end users via website and the Android-App Regenradar Bonn. Raw data is provided after request per filetransfer-protocol.
